Machine Tool Engineering

Machine Tool Engineering (MTE) has been at its current location since 1976.  Sarah and Kurt George purchased the business in 1989.  At that time, the shop equipment consisted of an engine lathe and two Bridgeport mills.  Our primary focus was on repair and maintenance for local industries.  Over the years, our company has seen three additions to the original building increasing the total facility size of 18.300 square feet.  Housed in this facility are eighteen CNC machines and a full line or support equipment.  MTE is now servicing customers from all over the United States in a variety of markets.  We specialize in tight tolerance turning and milling operations with grinding capabilities.

MTE offers the latest in CNC technology to provide our customers with the top quality service they expect.  There are few jobs that are too large or too small for us to handle.  We are experienced in taking a prototype need through production.  We provide certified inspection following ISO 9001/2000, also optionally offering CMM documentation.  Complimenting our late model Mitutoyo CMM, is our full line of supporting inspection equipment.  Climate controlling the entire facility helps MTE achieve accurate and repeatable results from the first stages of production through the final phases of inspection.  Upon request our skilled inspection personnel will provide any dimensional documentation may be required.

“Machine Tool Engineering is committed to provide our customers with the highest quality products.  We continuously strive to meet or exceed our customer’s quality standards through rigorous inspection procedures. We offer serialization of parts and many outsourcing options, from heat treat to coatings,” said Sarah George, president of MTE.

Kurt George said, “Partnering with the City and Area Development helped us through a variety of ways to grow our business.”

Winnebago Industries, Inc. is a leading U.S. manufacturer of motor homes, self-contained recreation vehicles used primarily in leisure travel and outdoor recreation activities. The Company builds quality motor homes under the Winnebago and Itasca brand names with state-of-the-art computer aided design and manufacturing systems on automotive-styled assembly lines.

Headquartered in Forest City, Iowa, Winnebago Industries identified a need to expand its operations. With help from the Charles City Area Development Corporation, Winnebago Industries now has three facilities in Charles City:

Charles City Hardwoods Facility
: The Charles City Hardwoods facility manufactures the solid wood cabinetry, as well as the cabinet doors and drawers for all Winnebago Industries’ motor homes. All millworks and lineal trims are also created in this facility. Established in 1999, the Hardwoods facility utilizes state-of-the-art equipment, such as an automated stain finishing system, to create a superior product.

Charles City Assembly Facility: This is a subassembly facility that currently manufactures components found in the Company’s motor homes.

Charles City Manufacturing Facility: The Charles City Manufacturing facility manufactures Class C motor homes. This state-of-the-art, assembly line facility opened in 2003.

Winnebago Industries chose Charles City as the site for its expansion opportunities for several reasons:

• The Community had the forethought and courage to build our first building on speculation. The location fit our needs well with easy access to the Avenue of the Saints highway.
• There is a good employee base within the community.
• Charles City individuals and organizations, as well as local and state officials, are very forward thinking, with a very positive economic development orientation. They worked very hard and energetically to seek out our business.

"We were so pleased with the outcome of the Hardwoods Facility, our first expansion to Charles City, that we also established two more facilities within the community, making a long-term commitment to the area,” said Winnebago Industries President Ed Barker. "We are very excited and pleased to be a part of the Charles City community.”

Salsbury Chemicals, Inc. is a subsidiary of the Cambrex Corporation of East Rutherford, New Jersey. Salsbury maintains its administration, research and development, and manufacturing facilities in Charles City, Iowa and markets its products and services worldwide. The company's roots date back to 1929 when it was part of Dr. Salsbury's Laboratories, a company founded in that year to develop and market animal health products. Although animal health products are still important to Salsbury's business, the company, under the ownership of Cambrex since 1991, has dedicated it's future to the business of providing services and products to the Life Sciences industry. A key part of Salsbury's business is refining and scaling-up a customer's technology to provide small quantities of new drugs for pre-clinical and clinical trials. Once FDA approves the new drug, Salsbury is in a position to manufacture the product commercially for the customer.

We have established relationships with numerous drug companies worldwide working on exciting new products for the treatment of a wide range of diseases. Salsbury is proud of the contribution it makes to improving the health and well-being of literally millions of people suffering from various health afflictions. Current Salsbury products are used to make drugs for the treatment of prostate cancer, intestinal bowel disorders, atherosclerosis, pulmonary inflammation, cholesterol reduction, and kidney dialysis.

Salsbury has grown considerably under Cambrex's ownership and will continue to play a key role in Cambrex's success as a leading global supplier of human health products to the Life Sciences industry. Salsbury could not have enjoyed this success without the support of the community, city, county, and state. "The Charles City Area Development Corporation (CCADC) embodies this support at the local level and has been very instrumental in facilitating Salsbury's growth need; whether it be infrastructure such as highway access, storm water control, airport improvements, or facilitating TIF grants for major expansion. Salsbury considers the CCADC a partner in facilitating the growth of our business," says Russ Smith, Senior Vice President Operations & Site Manager.
